Renewable Energy Communities to Boost the Energy Transition

The Interreg MED Renewable Energy Community will take part in the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2021 with a side event on the 27th October on renewable energy communities (RECs) as catalysts for the energy transition in the Mediterranean.
The event will highlight the role of RECs to boost the green energy transition across the Mediterranean region. RECs have multiple benefits, from reducing energy poverty to bringing together neighbours and creating a sense of belonging. These energy communities are essential for the green energy transition, and to reach the European Union’s goals of climate neutrality set out in the EU Green Deal; yet, what is needed to establish these networks and ensure that they reach their full potential?
The two-part event will begin with the experiences and lessons learnt by three representatives from RECs within the Interreg MED Renewable Energy’s ETU Initiative; José Miguel Granados – representing the case of Monachil (Spain) –, Carmelo Licitra – representative of the Ragusa’s case (Italy) –, and Sergio Olivero – representing the flagship case of Magliano Alpi (Italy) – will present the barriers and opportunities found in the process of establishing their RECs, and how the ETU Initiative is supporting them to implement their REC aspirations.
The event’s second session will focus on European legislative frameworks in relation to RECs. Stavroula Pappa – Policy Expert at REScoop.eu –, and Achille Hannoset – Policy Officer at DG ENER (EU Commission) – will discuss the importance of including RECs in energy policy across the EU to facilitate their establishment and support the green energy transition. Following the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers at the end of both sessions.
